What’s Your Story?: Tanya Michelle: The Perfect Opportunity

“What’s Your Story?” is a guest post feature on BCBA’s blog. Indie/Self-Published authors are invited to write about their books, writing journey, creative process, inspiration, rewards and challenges of publishing, etc. They can go in whatever direction they choose. We are excited and grateful for their willingness to share, and we hope you enjoy Tanya Michelle’s story. Go here for more WYS? Posts.

I have been reading and writing since the age of four, and I have always dreamed of writing children’s books. I became inspired to write a book after seeing children of color being misrepresented in text. I wanted to create something not only to represent my students that I was teaching at the time but also to represent my son as well. The election of the first Black president was the perfect opportunity finally to put my dream into action. This dream finally became a reality in 2010 when I released my first book The President Looks Like Me. This book has been enjoyed worldwide and has been featured in numerous magazines, read by countless celebrities, and was even a big hit at the 2013 Presidential Inauguration!

In addition to writing, I enjoy promoting the power and importance of education. I was an elementary educator for ten years and have been a middle school administrator for five years. I hold a bachelor’s degree in communications and a master’s degree in education.

I continuously draw inspiration from real-life situations and real-world events. I desire to address issues that children face while instilling purpose, hope, and inspiration. In my spare time, I enjoy reading, meditating, traveling, and talking! I also love watching my son play basketball and spending time with my family and friends.
